On my recent MTG journey, I built a couple of decks that were too powerful for casual play. They weren’t at cEDH level yet, but definitely too strong for casual tables. Including Stella Lee, Wild Card, Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain artifact storm, infinite mana combo elves, etc.

This is why I decided to build Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder

I had never played a Rakdos deck before, and the art on the card looks awesome. I built this deck with a new approach—every card was purchased from a local game store. Previously, I would check EDH rec, watch videos, and search for synergies. But this time, I didn’t order cards online.

Instead, I started digging through piles of cards like a wild hog, picking out every synergistic card I could find. To ensure that I could play plenty of cards and have a nice experience, I added lots of card draw, such as Necropotence, Necrodominance, etc. Many of these cards were affordable and easy to find in the game store. I wasn’t worried about the deck becoming too powerful.

And I was right!

After building the deck, I started playing with my friends. And oh boy, the wheels were spinning! I was drawing cards off Skullclamp, sacrificing stuff, creating chump blockers with Bitterblossom - but nothing significant was happening. I got wrecked many times by Simic deck, and honestly, that didn’t feel bad at all. At one point, I had Carrion Feeder on the battlefield, and I was wondering if casting my commander was even the smart play, LMAO.

Carrion Feeder can sacrifice at instant speed and costs only 1 mana.

Despite all that, Evereth, Viceroy of Plunder is now one of my favorite commanders. She beats Carrion Feeder in drip. I’ve created a deck that I can comfortably play at casual tables, and it still does many things I love - drawing cards, casting spells, and allowing me to play lots of Magic. I will definitely do this more often. I’ve noticed plenty of underpowered decks led by overpowered commanders, but it’s incredibly fun to play a well-functioning deck with an underpowered commander. And keep the engine spinning.
